Tummo

February 22 -23, 2025

On Zoom

With Chaphur Rinpoche

Chaphur Rinpoche will lead practitioners in the preliminary and  core breathing practices from Shardza Rinpoche’s Tummo Text, “Self Arising Inner Kayas”. Tummo is a breathing practice central to Tantra practice and very helpful for Dzogchen practitioners in achieving  enlightenment, according to Shardza Rinpoche, an accomplished Dzogchen master of the 20th century.

The root text of Tummo was written and taught by Sangchok Tharthuk Gyalpo and comes from the Mother Tantra teachings. Later commentaries by Gyalshen Milu Samlek are also included.

Tummo is a practice which clears  the negative emotions of this life and the karmic traces of past lives. It increases physical health and mental wellbeing.  Many people have reported improvements in heart and lung health as well as  increased concentration and greater memory retention.  The overall result is a  calm and peaceful mind.

The meaning of Tummo is “inner fire” and the practice is to generate and direct this heat or warmth within the body. The Tummo practice also works with the Tsa (channels), the Lung (wind or breathing) and the Tigles (light drops of consciousness) inside the channels. Through visualizing a red hot needle of iron at the junction of the three channels,  all negativities are incinerated and purified, allowing the unification of inner wind and the mind to occur.

Chaphur Rinpoche will also discuss the different kinds of breathing that can be utilized.  He will demonstrate the smooth, gentle breathing characteristic of the Jam Lung (smooth wind) practice as well as  the  more intense Bar Lung (wrathful wind) practice which  incorporates packing air into the lungs and holding it there for an extended length of time.

Teaching on Dzogchen, the 21 Nails

October 26-27, 2024

5:00 PM – 8:00 PM

On Zoom

With Chaphur Rinpoche

One of the innermost secret teachings from the Zhang Zhung Nyen Gyud (Aural Transmission of Zhang Zhung). Each of the 21 nails describes an essential point of Dzogchen practice – Directly cutting through doubts about one’s Natural State by tracing the Nature of Mind back to its Source.

The teaching of the Twenty-One Nails is a direct expression of Enlightenment – our Natural Mind. Each Nail describes this Natural State from a different point of view. The views are called “Nails” or “Seals” because they stabilize ones experiential understanding of the Natural State.

These teachings are said to have come directly from the Primordial Buddha, Küntu Zangpo, who then passed them down by direct mind-to-mind Transmission to eight successive Buddhas. It was then transmitted orally to 24 human Bön Lineage Holders, all of whom were yogis and siddhas who achieved the Rainbow Light Body.

In the 7th century Gyerpung Nangzher Lodpo set down the teachings in writing for the first time in the Zhang Zhung language after receiving them from Tapihritsa, the 25th Zhang Zhung Master, during their third and final encounter.

This Teaching has been transmitted in an unbroken succession of Lineage Holders down to our Teachers of the present day.

Wealth Vase, Yangbum Ritual

With Chaphur Rinpoche

February 17th 2024
On Zoom

Chaphur Rinpoche will once again perform the Accomplishment of the Yang Ritual as he fills the  wealth vases with the precious, blessed  items from Tibet.  This ritual was originally transmitted by Buddha Tönpa Shenrap as an antidote for the suffering of sentient beings experiencing a lack of well being.

Material well being in life gives us the opportunity for compassion toward others as well as sustaining the conditions for developing a successful spiritual practice. Within the teachings of the Nine Ways of Yungdrung Bön, there are rituals specifically performed in order to reinforce and increase well being and prosperity. These rituals are called Yang Drup, or accomplishment of the Yang.  Yang means the force of prosperity and good fortune and includes wealth, harmonious and supportive relationships, merit, health, positive opportunities, and other desirable results.

These rituals strengthen the force of personal good fortune and good luck both by requesting the assistance of several  wealth deities  including Zhambhala and  Sherab Chamma, and  also by calling back the energetic  forces that may have become separated from the individual. As a way of anchoring this force of good fortune and good luck, a wealth vase is created which becomes a sacred receptacle for the wealth deities.

This wealth vase, or Yangbum, is filled with many kinds of precious objects, as well as mantras, and will be sealed and blessed  by Chaphur Rinpoche.   This vase can be placed in one’s home or business.  Regular incense or water offerings as well as prayer and mantra recitations in front of the vase maintain a connection with the wealth deities.

If you are attending on zoom, please place your wealth vase in front of you as you participate in the blessings, prayers and mantras.

As you both experience and regularly practice this ritual, we at Gyalshen are joining with you in joyful anticipation of the arrival and deepening of many expressions of prosperity in your life.

Red Garuda Teaching and Black Garuda Transmission

With Chaphur Rinpoche

February 8-9 2024
On Zoom

Chaphur Rinpoche will lead a practice based on the teaching of the Red Garuda. The Red Garuda practice supports the student in rising above all obstacles and obscurations. Rinpoche will guide and empower students to use this Red Garuda meditation and mantra as potent spiritual medicine to overcome illnesses and to help restore a healing balance for all beings.

In the Bön tradition, the Garuda holds a special position of importance and reverence as an enlightened yidam, a wisdom being who emanates in forms of each of the five elements. The Red Garuda is associated with the fire element and the wrathful wisdom that overcomes all obstacles and brings healing, protection, and positive transformation to all beings.

Takla Mebar winter retreat

With Chaphur Rinpoche

December 1st 2023 – 1st January 2023
On Zoom

December 1st 8am to 9am PT,  Rinpoche will give instructions regarding the preparations for the retreat as well as beginning the actual retreat in your home. This will include how to make the offering tormas, the initial Takla Mebar mantra to recite,  and the beginning visualization practice.

Chaphur Rinpoche will be in personal retreat for the month of December. During that time, his practice will be focused on his personal Yidam, Takla Mebar.  Rinpoche has been deepening his connection with his family lineage Yidam each December for many years. This year all sangha members are warmly invited to join Rinpoche in doing these powerful, healing practices from home or a  chosen personal retreat location.

Every Saturday Rinpoche will give teachings via Zoom on the generation and completion stages of the Takla Mebar practice and their relation to tantric practice in the larger Bön Buddhist context. Students will be encouraged to practice their own retreat  focusing on the Deity, accumulating mantras, and engaging in other Takla Mebar practices.

In order to overcome negative forces as well as  the  negative emotions and obstacles they create, Tonpa Shenrab Miwo manifested as Takla Mebar ( the Flaming Tiger Deity.) Through  the power of his compassionate wisdom, evil forces were transformed  into compassionate and peaceful beings.

As we look at the many negative forces operating in our world today as well as our own internal negativities, we realize that there is a great need for them  to be transformed into positive aspects that can bring much needed blessings to relieve sufferings experienced worldwide. The same  Takla Mebar healing practice  taught and  embodied by the Flaming Tiger Deity thousands of years ago,  can be of great benefit to

human beings today.  Expressions of  outer  poisons such as murder, theft and bullying can be transformed into many positive aspects including love, compassion, generosity, and kindness.  Also,  our inner negative emotions can  be transformed   into the clarity of the Five Wisdoms: the wisdom of emptiness,  mirror-like wisdom, the wisdom of equality, discriminating wisdom, and all-accomplishing wisdom.

The Chaphur family members have been the primary  lineage holders of  Takla Mebar  since the very beginning of their recorded family history. Annual Takla Mebar retreats have been their practice for many centuries. Today, during the month of December,  we  are invited and welcomed to join them in this powerful and much needed healing.   As we connect in a spiritual field of oneness,   Chaphur Rinpoche becomes  a conduit for us of  many  auspicious blessings from centuries  of   powerful Takla Mebar  practices as well as  their healing transformations.  Please join with the intention of first  healing ourselves and then effortlessly sharing our kindness,  compassion, and love  with all those whose lives we touch.

January 1st: On New Year’s  Eve, the conclusion of the Takla Mebar retreat, we will join together as we perform  the ritual of “Dokpa.”   Literally “Dokpa”  means turning back obstacles. In preparation for the 2024 New Year, we will combine the fire energy of Takla Mebar with the Dokpa ritual to clear all negative obstacles.   This clearing sets the stage for the manifestation of the much needed  positive blessings of peace, wisdom, compassion, love and prosperity to manifest fully in all aspects of our lives and in the world  in the New Year of 2024.

Our Retreat will be conducted according to the  Bön tradition. Daily retreat practice will include the 4 Generosities  (offerings):   Sang (purification offering),  Chutör ( water offering),  Sur   (burnt food offering)  and Chöd  (offering of the body).

PHOWA

With Chaphur Rinpoche

November 22-26
On Zoom

In response to the request of many students, Chaphur Rinpoche has generously agreed to give instructions on the practice of Phowa, or Transference of Consciousness. The ultimate benefit of this practice is to steady the practitioner’s mind at the time of one’s own death and to clear any obstacles that would prevent consciousness from rising freely into the enlightened state. In the Bön tradition, for over 18,000 years,  Phowa has been performed by empowered lamas for practitioners at the time of death to support the transfer of consciousness to the enlightened state.

Today, the practice is being taught to practitioners, not only for their own benefit, but to encourage them to develop the focused practice and intention, that can assist others to attain enlightenment in the dying process. To be effective, one must first receive transmission which Rinpoche will give to those who are attending this retreat. Then, when combined with focused practice and intention, whether performed by a Lama or a practitioner,  Phowa can become an expression of Supreme Bodhicitta.

Heart Essence of Dakinis

With Chaphur Rinpoche

October 14-15, 2023
On Zoom

The Bonpo teachings are deep like the ocean, particularly Dzogchen teachings. Many students of Bon are familiar with Dzogchen teachings from male lineage holders and may not be aware of the many female Dzogchen practitioners who have achieved enlightenment. These female enlightened beings are known as Dakini or Khandro. The Dakinis are real-life, female practitioners who have achieved realization of the Mature of Mind through Dzogchen practice here on earth. Dakini or Khandro lineage teachings are rarely taught in the west.

Therefore, Chaphur Rinpoche will offer instruction on the Heart Essence of the Thirty Signs and Meanings of the Female Lineage, The Mogyud ( Female lineage), from the Cycle of Essential Instructions of the Male and Female Lineages from the Bonpo Dzogchen teachings.

During this teaching, Rinpoche will give specific instructions on how the Dakinis or Khandros practiced and achieved realization of the nature of mind. Rinpoche will teach individual Dzogchen view, meditation, conduction and result (fruit). In addition, Rinpoche will also give instructions on the heart essence of the Khandro Dzogchen lineage practices and realization songs, originating all the way back to Gyalwa Kuntu Zangpo.

Heart Drops of Kuntu Zangpo (Dharmakaya)

With Chaphur Rinpoche
Part IV: Bardo

September 23-24,  2023
On Zoom

This weekend will focus on discovering aspects of the Bardo from Shardza’s Heart Drops of KuntuZangpo. Our lives are filled with beginnings and endings – as each moment passes, a new one appears to take its place.  Nothing stands still.  What happens during the process of change is a state called “the transitional phase”, which in Tibetan is called the “Bardo”.  It is the actual moment of change occurring at the end of one phase and the beginning of the next—it is a condition of great power and potential within which anything could happen—it is a moment of great opportunity for those who perceive it

The Bardo generally refers to the time in-between the separation of our mind or consciousness from our present physical body, to the time the consciousness enters the mother’s womb for re-birth.  All Tibetan traditions teach:  (1) that there are three main Bardo states; (2) that all sentient beings will experience the Bardo; and finally, (3) that the different Bardo states will arise consecutively.  An experienced practitioner who has prepared and has some knowledge or skills will be able to recognize the Bardo states and, depending on individual capacity and experience, it is possible to reach enlightenment or the complete realization of mind, in the first, second or the third Bardo.

Keksel

With Chaphur Rinpoche

August 25-27,  2023
On Zoom

About the Practice: What is Keksel?

Keksel is a general Tibetan term that describes any practice involving the subtle channels, winds and drops or “tigles. ” These three are used in a spiritual context to give the practitioner an experience of the enlightened body, speech and mind. In addition, keksel is also practiced for its numerous health benefits.

Tibetan medical theory posits that our body and consciousness is composed of five elements (earth, water, fire, wind and space). These five are expressed within us through the interconnection of our flesh, blood, heat, breath, and consciousness. They are connected to the five organs: liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, and heart. Those organs are in turn, connected to the five negative emotions:  attachment, jealousy, ignorance, pride, and anger.

However, the five negative emotions can be transformed into the five wisdoms: emptiness, mirror-like wisdom, the wisdom of equality, discriminating wisdom, and all accomplishing wisdom. The transformation of the five negative emotions into the five wisdoms is the basis of spiritual practice. Keksel provides a powerful method to transform the five poisons into the five wisdoms, and thus attain liberation. However, through its activity of harmonizing the elements within the body, keksel practice can also have a profound effect on the health of the practitioner.

Teaching Lineage:

Both the tsa lung and trulkhor practices from the Bönpo tantric and dzogchen traditions are types of keksel. This course incorporates movements and practices from both of these traditions as well as the recitation of mantra. This teaching will incorporate all three of these traditions.

When describing the reason for the synthesis of these separate traditions, Chaphur Rinpoche writes,

“In ancient times, those Bön practitioners who emphasized Keksel practice, lived long and healthy lives and attained lasting peace through the realization of their mind’s nature.  In modern societies and especially in the West, life is fast paced and cerebral. This creates a mind and body disconnect which leads to further emotional and physical imbalances and problems in interpersonal relationships.  I believe that the Keksel teachings are well suited to address these issues. My desire is to distill the essential points of these teachings into one system that is even more effectively tailored to the Western mind.”

Also,  the lessons will be recorded and daily sessions will be available afterward.

Heart Drops of Kuntu Zangpo (Dharmakaya)

Part III: Thogal

With Chaphur Rinpoche

July 29-30,  2023
On Zoom

This weekend continues the teaching of Shardza Rinpoche’s Heart Drops of Kuntu Zangpo with his thogal teachings. The Heart Drops of Kuntu Zangpo presents Dzogchen teachings very directly “for those of sharp faculties.” In this section on thogal, Shardza begins an explanation of the superiority of thogal approaches over thegchod. He then continues with a description of the framework of thogal.

Following Shardza’s instructions, Chaphur Rinpoche will explain and demonstrate the key points of thogal, and will lead students in these practices which include:

1) the key points of the body, the thogal postures

21 Manifestations of Sherab Chamma

with Chaphur Rinpoche

June 27th – July 1st, 2023

Sherab Chamma is the Wisdom, Loving Mother of all beings and of all Buddhas. All Bön deities come from our  wise mother. By focusing on the 21 Manifestations of Sherab Chamma and their corresponding meditations, healing purifications, mantras and visualizations, all practitioners can  connect  more deeply to her. These powerful practices can benefit everyone as they clear obstacles and bring both  personal and global healing from fear, suffering and sickness.  At this retreat, Chaphur Rinpoché  will instruct us  in a step by step process to invoke the unbounded wisdom of the Loving Mother. The results of her blessings are powerful, inner transformations and the experience of unbounded joy.

Sherab Chamma is the feminine counterpart to Shenlha Odkar. As is his, her body is also “dzog ku,” the body of perfection. She is available to everyone for comfort, guidance,  and healing as she has the power to dispel all obstacles including  fear, sickness, sadness and  the negative impact of demonic forces. Thereby, she is able to prolong life.

Sherab Chamma holds a mirror in her left hand. This mirror represents the purity of her  heart as reflected in a perfect understanding of the karma and suffering of all beings. The vase in her right hand contains the essence of the potential hopes, dreams,  and accomplishments of all who are committed to her.  Her throne is supported by two snow lions representing her supremacy over all life.

What you will receive:

The 21 Sherab Chamma, Transmission and instruction from the commentary of the 21 Sherab Chamma Manifestations text by H.H. 22nd Menri Trizin Rinpoche, known as Khenchen Nyima Tenzin.

TUMMO

with Chaphur Rinpoche

June 3-4, 2023

Tummo is a breathing practice central to tantra practice and very helpful for Dzogchen practitioners to achieve enlightenment in this lifetime, according to Shardza Rinpoche, an accomplished Dzogchen master of the 20th century.

The root text of Tummo was written and taught by Sangchok Tharthuk Gyalpo and comes from the Mother Tantra teachings with later commentaries by Gyalshen Milu Samlek.

Tummo is a practice to clear the negative emotions of this life and the karmic traces of past lives. It increases physical health and mental wellbeing.  Many people have reported improvements in heart and lung health, enhanced concentration and memory and an overall calm and peaceful mind.

The meaning of Tummo is “inner fire” and the practice is to generate and direct this heat or warmth within the body. The Tummo practice also works with the Tsa (channels), the Lung (wind or breathing) and the Tigles (light drops of consciousness) inside the channels. Through visualizing a red hot needle of iron at the junction of the three channels all of the negativities are incinerated and purified, allowing for the unification of inner wind and the mind.

This 2 day retreat will go into detail about many aspects of tsa, lung and tigles. For instance,   the three channels or tsa contain wisdom, breath, lights, blood, and drops of nectar or bliss.  There are also  nine types of Lung (breath or wind) including samsaric, nirvanic, natural mind, wisdom and awareness. In addition,  we  will also discuss the two kinds of tigle drops:  physical drops inside our bodies and the drops of our nature of  mind.

Chaphur Rinpoche will also discuss the different kinds of breathing that can be utilized —  the smooth, gentle breathing characteristic of the Jam Lung (smooth wind) practice and the Bar Lung (wrathful wind) which is more intense as it incorporates packing air into the lungs and holding it  for a length of time.

Come to this in-depth training and gain the knowledge and experience to enhance your physical, mental and spiritual being. Tummo – a wonderful tool for the rest of your life.

Dzogchen Instructions on the Golden Essence

With Chaphur Rinpoche

April 10-16th, 2023

5PM – 9:30PM  (CET-European Time)

Drenpa Namkha gave the first Dzogchen oral transmission of the instructions on the Golden Essence (Dzogchen Serdam) to his disciple, Shensye Lhaje, in the 8th century. Since that time, it has been closely guarded as one of the most important Bön Dzogchen teachings, and has only been transmitted to a select group of practitioners.

This teaching gives clear instructions on how to conduct one’s life from the view of Dzogchen – a boundless mind which is clear, powerful, and contains full enlightenment within its scope. As Drenpa Namkha said, “Whoever is connected with this instruction, having understood as consciousness the sound, light and rays and having realized the empty essence of the nature of mind, may you be primordially awakened in the space (dbyings) of the nature of Bon.”

Chaphur Rinpoche will impart these precious instructions, which are now being shared in the West. It is our wish that the blessing inherent in receiving this teaching is available  to all. Everyone is welcome to join us for this Teaching and Retreat.

For the registration link please send an email to: kontakt@chaphurfoundation.com

This Retreat is open to students who  have any level of familiarity with the Bön teachings. All are warmly invited to attend in person or via Zoom. Please register by March 1st.  Also,  the retreat will be recorded and daily sessions will be sent out shortly afterwards.

Heart Drops of Kuntu Zangpo is a text  written by Shardza Rinpoche, one of the great Dzogchen masters of Yungdrung Bön.  It is a powerful, direct method of Dzogchen.  It encompasses 4 sections; Rushan, Trekchod, Thogal and the Bardo.

Heart Drops of Kuntu Zangpo, Part I: Rushan

Rushan literally means separation, specifically the separation between Samsara and Nirvana.  During this first section of Heart Drops Of Kuntu Zangpo, Rinpoche will give an introduction to Samsara and Nirvana through explanations of  the differences among each of the 6 realms (the Hell, Hungry Ghost, Animal, Human, DemiGod and God realms) with more emphasis on the Human Realm.

Phowa Retreat

Transference of Consciousness (Phowa)

With Chaphur Rinpoche

on Zoom

March 3rd – 5th,  6pm to 9pm Central European Time (CET)

Wealth Vase, Yangbum Ritual

February  25th, 2023 5 pm-9:30 pm CET

with Chaphur Rinpoche

Gyalshen Institute is pleased to announce that we have  several Yangbum (wealth vases) from Tibet that have been blessed by many Rinpoches, Geshes, and monks from Nangzhig monastery.

Those who have previously received a blessed Yangbum do not need to order an additional vase. You are invited to have your vases reblessed by Rinpoche at this ceremony. If you are attending in person, please bring your wealth vase with you.

Rinpoche will also inform each participant of the direction the Yangbum needs to face to receive wealth blessings during this coming year.

To register for this celebration and to receive a new Yangbum vase after the blessing ritual, please click the link below:

The cost of the vase includes both the shipping cost from Tibet to Gyalshen and the mailing cost from Gyalshen to your home. When you order a wealth vase, make sure to enter your full name and complete  address including your country and zip code.  We will begin the packing and mailing process a few days after the ritual.

Takla Mebar Retreat with Chaphur Rinpoche

December 1st, 2022 – January 1st, 2023

with Chaphur Rinpoche

Zoom sessions will be on Saturday, December 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th

8am to 9am (PT) and 5pm to 6pm Central European Time (CET)

December 31st  8-9pm (PT) and January 1st 5am-6am Central European Time:

Here is a short description of Takla Mebar:

In order to overcome negative forces and the personal, negative emotions and obstacles they create, Tonpa Shenrab Miwo manifested as Takla Mebar (Flaming Tiger Deity) and subjugated those evil forces through his compassionate wisdom, transforming them into compassionate and peaceful beings.

Takla Mebar heals the outer poisons by transforming them into wisdom and positive aspects.  The inner negativities are transformed into the clarity of the Five Wisdoms: the wisdom of emptiness,  mirror-like wisdom, the wisdom of equality, discriminating wisdom, and all-accomplishing wisdom. The Chaphur family members have been the lineage holders of this Yidam  since the very beginning of their recorded family history.

December 31st: On New Year’s  Eve, the conclusion of the Takla Mebar retreat, we will join in the ritual of “Dokpa.”   Literally “Dokpa”  means turning back obstacles. In preparation for the 2023 New Year, we will combine the fire energy of Takla Mebar with the Dokpa  B ritual to clear all negative obstacles, allowing the positive blessings of peace, wisdom, compassion, love and prosperity to manifest fully in all aspects of our lives.

Our Retreat will be conducted according to the  Bön tradition. Daily retreat practice will include the 4 Generosities  (offerings):   Sang (purification offering),  Chutör ( water offering),  Sur   (burnt food offering)  and Chöd  (offering of the body).
